興味のある人のために、「The Great Gatsby」第二章冒頭の原文を載せておく。（タイプミスはご容赦願う。）ご自分で翻訳にチャレンジしてはいかがか。まあ、詩的感受性の高い村上春樹なら見事に訳している可能性もあるが、私の持っている本は他の人の訳である。


About half way between West Egg and New York the motor-road hastily joins the railroad and beside it for a quarter of a mile so as to shrink away from a certain desolate area of land. This is a valley of ashes---a fantastic farm  where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens,where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of  men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of grey cars crawls along an invisible track gives out a ghastly creak and comes to rest,and immediately the ash-grey men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud which screens their obscure operations from your sight.
 
１行目のhastilyは直前のmotor-roadの擬人化だろう。２行目以下はvalley of ashesをfantastic farmにたとえたものかと思う。つまり、それ以降の描写はすべて、この土地のすべてが頭から灰を被っていることの暗喩である。立ち昇る煙まで灰でできているわけだ。（もちろん、冗談だろう。）動いている存在は「崩壊しつつある灰」である。
上の文章のニュアンス（独白者の感覚や比喩表現）が映像化はできないことが分かるのではないか。実際、映画ではこの「灰の谷」はまったく印象に残らない。映像化するまでもない、という判断だろう。
